DOJ Weighs Criminal Charges Against Dragonfly Capital Over Tornado Cash Investments
Federal prosecutors revealed in court Friday they are considering criminal charges against employees of crypto venture firm Dragonfly Capital, including general partner Tom Schmidt, for their 2020 investment in privacy protocol Tornado Cash. The disclosure came during proceedings against Tornado Cash developer Roman Storm, who faces 45 years if convicted on money laundering and sanctions violation charges.
Messages between Storm and Dragonfly partners Schmidt and Haseeb Qureshi were entered as evidence, establishing New York jurisdiction and allegedly demonstrating profit motives behind Tornado Cash's interface modifications. The defense may call Schmidt to testify, potentially complicating the government's case against Storm.
